To The Originators & Stewards of This Land

A commissioned set of linen table runners, in collaboration with ArtPop Street Gallery and Carolina Farm Trust.

Inspired by Carolina’s lush landscapes, I’ve dedicated this piece to the African Diaspora  who’ve tended these regions and the Indigenous nations (e.g., Sugeree, Catawba) that call this slice of the South home.

The geometric elements offer a moment of contrast while also symbolizing the intersection of ethnicities, both found across the states and my ancestral roots.

Although I used a cyanotype technique, the indigo color prompted my curiosity during the brainstorming phase, leading me to research the overlap between this hue and those in relationship to the Carolina land.

Indigo was a key cash crop in 18th-century South Carolina, processed through the exploitative labor of enslaved African and Indigenous peoples. This plant was frequently exported and primarily used as a valuable dye.

Knowledge is power.
